Which Aesthetic Treatments Are Safe for the Summer?

In preparation for beach or pool time, upcoming vacations, or a return to socializing after being vaccinated for COVID, you may be considering a summer skin detox or other aesthetic spruce-ups. But which are among the wisest choices in the summer heat that is already upon us?

Olansky Dermatology & Aesthetics specializes in a wide range of options. Here are the top few we recommend for summertime safety and confidence.

Summertime Skincare Do’s

Facials

Facials can be a great way to rejuvenate and rebalance your skin after seasonal changes from winter to spring. Beyond cleaning out your pores and the puffiness-causing waste, they also increase blood circulation, which optimizes cell renewal. Beyond that, they are also refreshing and relaxing — all year round!

For an even bigger hydrating boost (or possibly some post-sunburn repair) the Intraceuticals Blown Oxygen Facial may be for you. This advanced facial involves a thorough cleanse and exfoliation to remove any potential toxins. Then pressurized oxygen is administered in a stream through a wand or other tool. There’s no healing or downtime afterward, so you’ll leave the procedure only feeling dewy and refreshed.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a skin resurfacing treatment that sweeps a spray of crystals across your skin at a high velocity, and then suctions them up immediately. This advanced yet simple process helps reduce fine lines, acne scars, hyperpigmentation and other unevenness.

Soothing, pain-free, and requiring zero downtime, microdermabrasion is a great way to get (and keep) your summer glow!

Dermaplaning

A terrific alternative to chemical peels during the summer, dermaplaning will help remove layers of dead skin cells, and freshen up your face. For the procedure, a tool similar to a razor is used to gently scrape off the layers of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. Though this may sound harsh, the process is painless and there is virtually no downtime required.

You will want to protect this newly revealed skin from the sun afterward. We recommend using a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher to keep sun damage from reversing the effects.

Summertime Skincare Don’ts

Peels & Laser Treatments

Unlike the cleansing fruit enzyme peel we use during our Brightening Facial, chemical peels can be a bit more intense, since they remove more layers. Afterward it’s important to avoid sunlight, which is why summer’s intense sunshine is a strong deterrent.

“When you have a chemical peel,” board-certified dermatologist Robyn Gmyrek, MD told POPSUGAR last summer, “the acid used removes the topmost layer of skin off, rendering you more susceptible to sun damage. Both sunlight and heat can cause more extensive damage and hyperpigmentation to this now-delicate skin while healing.”

Laser treatments are very similar to chemical peels, in that they help exfoliate the top layer of your skin, but they do so at a much more extreme level. As a result, your skin is even more highly sensitive to even the slightest sun exposure.

In general, it may be better to reserve getting these treatments — at least until after Labor Day.
