Mohs Surgery – Your Best Solution

More than a million Americans will be treated for skin cancer this year and about one in five will develop a skin cancer in their lifetimes, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. There are many treatment methods for skin cancer. However, one surgical technique has strongly stood the test of time. Mohs surgery was first developed in the 1930’s by Dr. Frederick Mohs. Today, this microscopic surgery for skin cancer is recognized at the single most effective technique for removing Basal Cell Carcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (BCCs and SCCs). Mohs surgery has skyrocketed these skin cancer cures rates to 98% or higher.

Why is Mohs surgery a superior treatment?

Essentially Mohs surgery takes the guesswork out of skin cancer removal, using a precise and methodic process that retains the most healthy tissues possible while eliminating all cancerous cells.

A qualified Mohs surgeon conservatively removes the skin cancer and then uses meticulous mapping and microscopic examination of the cancerous tissue and the margins surrounding it to determine if the surgery should continue. If the margins still contain cancer, the surgeon removes more tissue and this process is repeated until the margins are clear of cancer.

If your skin cancer was in a prominent area such as your face, you may choose to have a board certified plastic surgeon perform Mohs reconstruction after your excision. Modern plastic surgery techniques can effectively restore facial features to their most natural form and function, helping patients truly put the past behind them after skin cancer.

Dr. David Olansky of Olansky Dermatology Associates is a certified Mohs surgery expert who can help you understand your skin cancer and the most effective surgical removal techniques.
