How to Avoid Chapped Lips This Winter

Lip Care Atlanta GA

Winter can be a brutal season for your skin, especially the skin on your lips. Not only are your lips extra exposed to the dry air and cold temperatures, but your lips don’t have the oil and sweat glands like the rest of your skin to keep them moist. They are delicate areas of skin that can show damage fast. Did you know that your lips can dry out ten times faster than other skin on your face? Dryness leads to cracked, chapped and even bleeding lips that can be quite uncomfortable to deal with through the winter months.

Unfortunately, the lips are commonly overlooked until it is too late. You may be careful to put on a jacket, buy earmuffs or find the perfect gloves to protect yourself from the cold air, but what about your lips? Don’t make the mistake of not giving your lips the attention they need and deserve this winter.

Tips for Winter Lip Care

Don’t Lick. It is natural to want to lick your lips when they feel dry and chapped. However, this can actually make your problem worse. Licking your lips wicks away more moisture and can cause the outer skin cells to freeze in the cold air.

Avoid Picking. When your skin is cracking and peeling, you may be tempted to pick away the loose skin. This only irritates your lips and can lead to painful sores that are vulnerable to infection.

Be Mindful of Mouth-Breathing. If you wake up with a dry throat and lips, you may be breathing through your mouth while you sleep rather than your nose. Mouth-breathing dries out any existing moisture you may have on your lips with every breath you take. Breathing through your mouth is especially common during winter as many people have nasal and/or sinus congestion that prevents breathing through their nose. Nonetheless, an open mouth will only further dry out the lips during this cold season.

Choose the Right Lip Balm. This is important. Try to stay away from lip balms that contain camphor, eucalyptus, and menthol. These products may feel refreshing at first but will only dry out the lips faster in the long run. They also create the need for repetitive applications, which can create a vicious cycle of lip damage. Instead, choose an ointment-based lip balm with healing properties and sunscreen. Your lip balm should lock in moisture while creating a protective barrier against harsh winter elements.

Consider a Natural Home Remedy. Mother nature gives us several sources for lip protection and lip healing, including cucumber, milk cream, green tea bags and aloe vera.

Mandy Ramer, NP-C was such a pleasure to meet with. She listened to all of my concerns and addressed each one with a plan that fit my needs. I am so glad I picked Olansky Dermatology. Absolutely thrilled with their service from appointment setting through check out.

The appointment process is quick easy and convenient online. Parking is easy enough. I got in basically right at my appointment time. I didn’t have to wait hardly at all. The doctors and nurses are nice, knowledgeable and helpful. The procedure I had was easy and I got out fast and was on my way.

This was probably the best experience I’ve ever had going to a dermatologist. Every interaction I had with the staff was pleasant and they were so helpful. I had accidentally cancelled my appointment and the girls at the front desk help me get in so I could be seen and someone could help me. Which I really appreciated, most places would have just turned me away. The doctor or pa I saw that day I can’t remember her name was lovely and took great care of me. I will be going to Olansky’s going forward. You will not be disappointed! The staff is excellent!

Dr. Bender honestly changed my life around. I had extremely bad hormonal and cystic acne, and have been told for years that there is nothing I can do but wash my face and etc.. Dr. Bender gave me hope that there is hope she helped get my confidence back and now I’m finally free. She cares about her patients and takes her time with you every visit. If you need help in anything derma-logical then you really need to go to her.

Olansky Dermatology is wonderful! Our whole family goes. My daughter has had terrible eczema through the years and both my kids had mollescum too. They always make things better and spend time explaining whats wrong and how to fix it.

I was actually running a bit late, but they were very friendly and knowledgeable about what was going on with my skin. And also very timely.I will definitely stick with them!

Very professional and pleasant staff. When I arrived at my appointment this afternoon I was informed that my doctor called out sick and they tried calling to let me know but I just recently changed my number so they were unable to reach me. The receptionist was so sweet and helpful. Instead of leaving and making a new appointment they fit me in without an issue and without any waiting.

Dr. Ilyas was highly recommended to me so I decided to change dermatologists. I am so glad as I am pleased with his expertise and his highly professional manner. I am also delighted with Emily Raville, Aesthetician. She does a wonderful job and I am recommending her to my friends as well. I am completely satisfied – can’t get any better than that!
