5 Types of Teen Acne

sisters smiling

Pimples, zits, breakouts – whatever you prefer to call it, acne is a problematic skin condition for many teenagers. At a time when trying to fit in and look your best is especially important, an acne flare-up can be a major detriment to a teen’s self-esteem. While all acne is embarrassing to deal with, there are actually different types of acne. Finding out what you are dealing with can make a big difference in how you treat it.

When it comes to acne, WebMD lists the following five types:

  • Comedones: This is a non-inflammatory type of acne that includes the common whiteheads and blackheads and is non-inflammatory. These blemishes are caused by clogged pores that get inflamed when bacteria gets in.
  • Papules: These are tender, red bumps that develop when a clogged pore gets overfilled with debris. Papules typically do not contain pus inside.
  • Pustules: This type of acne is the most common. These pimples are marked by bumps that are red, inflamed and have a tiny white top.
  • Nodules: Nodule acne is a more severe form of acne. These are larger and more solid lesions are deep within the skin. Nodule acne can be painful.
  • Cystic: Cystic acne is another severe form of acne. These are also painful lesions deep in the skin, but they are filled with infectious material. Cystic acne is known for leaving scars.

To find out which type of acne your teen is suffering from, make an appointment with a board certified dermatologist. While some pimples can clear up with better hygiene or an over-the-counter product, there are some acne types that require more aggressive treatment. At Olansky Dermatology Associates, we offer a full menu of acne treatments for teens and adults. These may include a prescription cream or facial cleanser that is customized to your skin type. We also offer laser treatments, light therapy and teen facials that can restore a more attractive complexion. As an adolescent, you deserve to be confident in your skin!

Olansky Dermatology is wonderful! Our whole family goes. My daughter has had terrible eczema through the years and both my kids had mollescum too. They always make things better and spend time explaining whats wrong and how to fix it.

I recently had a couple appointments at Olanksy Dermatology and was seen by Julia Lee. Julie was excellent and quickly took care of the issue I was having with my skin. I would highly recommend Olansky Dermatology and especially Julia Lee to anyone in need of a dermatologist.

I was actually running a bit late, but they were very friendly and knowledgeable about what was going on with my skin. And also very timely.I will definitely stick with them!

Very professional and pleasant staff. When I arrived at my appointment this afternoon I was informed that my doctor called out sick and they tried calling to let me know but I just recently changed my number so they were unable to reach me. The receptionist was so sweet and helpful. Instead of leaving and making a new appointment they fit me in without an issue and without any waiting.

Dr. Ilyas was highly recommended to me so I decided to change dermatologists. I am so glad as I am pleased with his expertise and his highly professional manner. I am also delighted with Emily Raville, Aesthetician. She does a wonderful job and I am recommending her to my friends as well. I am completely satisfied – can’t get any better than that!

I have been going to Olansky Dematology for many years now, whether for a specific problem, or just for a really great deep facial, and I wouldn’t consider going anywhere else. Every single staff member is knowledgeable and professional. The customer service I receive every visit leaves a positive and lasting impression. I always feel comfortable and at ease while I am there. Great staff!

I seem to live at this place! Whether it’s for an appointment with a doctor or for an aesthetic treatment, I am there frequently. I cannot say enough good things. Efficient, friendly, the best doctors, and a new aesthetic center with the latest in procedures and products to keep us looking almost as young as we feel. It’s always fun to see Emily and she knows just what to recommend.
