Lupus and Your Skin

Dermatologist Discussing Poison Ivy Treatment With Patient Atlanta GA

Your skin is the largest organ in your body. Thus, there are many systemic health conditions that affect the appearance and the health of the skin. In particular, autoimmune diseases often show their symptoms within the skin. Lupus is among those. According to the Lupus Foundation of America, approximately 1.5 million Americans and five million people in the world have some type of lupus. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that is not generally well-understood, especially in terms of how you contract the disease and what your treatment options look like.

While there are a few different types of lupus, they can all lead to rashes, sores, thick scaly lesions or other unwanted symptoms within the skin. If you have lupus, your immune system is attacking healthy cells in your body as if it were a foreign agent or infection. This can affect and damage multiple organs in your body — including your skin!

Risk Factors and Symptoms of Lupus

We do not know the specific cause of lupus, but we do know that anyone can develop this autoimmune disease. However, women are more susceptible than men and African American, Hispanic, Native American and Asian women are at an increased risk over Caucasian women.

Of course, lupus doesn’t just affect the skin. If you have lupus, you may experience some the following symptoms:

• Muscle aches and pains
• Joint pain and swelling
• Skin rashes, most commonly found on the face
• Fever
• Chest pain when breathing deeply
• Loss of hair
• Pale fingers and toes
• Sun sensitivity
• Mouth sores
• Extreme fatigue
• Leg or eye swelling
• Swollen glands

Your lupus symptoms may not be present all the time. Like other autoimmune disorders, you may suffer from lupus flare-ups. It is important that you discuss with your physician as well as your dermatologist about ways you can manage your lupus symptoms and reduce the damage the disease does to your skin. At Olansky Dermatology, we may not be able to cure your lupus, but we can certainly offer treatments to make its effects on your skin less noticeable and more tolerable. Call today to learn more about our excellence in family skin care!

Olansky Dermatology is wonderful! Our whole family goes. My daughter has had terrible eczema through the years and both my kids had mollescum too. They always make things better and spend time explaining whats wrong and how to fix it.

I recently had a couple appointments at Olanksy Dermatology and was seen by Julia Lee. Julie was excellent and quickly took care of the issue I was having with my skin. I would highly recommend Olansky Dermatology and especially Julia Lee to anyone in need of a dermatologist.

I was actually running a bit late, but they were very friendly and knowledgeable about what was going on with my skin. And also very timely.I will definitely stick with them!

Very professional and pleasant staff. When I arrived at my appointment this afternoon I was informed that my doctor called out sick and they tried calling to let me know but I just recently changed my number so they were unable to reach me. The receptionist was so sweet and helpful. Instead of leaving and making a new appointment they fit me in without an issue and without any waiting.

Dr. Ilyas was highly recommended to me so I decided to change dermatologists. I am so glad as I am pleased with his expertise and his highly professional manner. I am also delighted with Emily Raville, Aesthetician. She does a wonderful job and I am recommending her to my friends as well. I am completely satisfied – can’t get any better than that!

I have been going to Olansky Dematology for many years now, whether for a specific problem, or just for a really great deep facial, and I wouldn’t consider going anywhere else. Every single staff member is knowledgeable and professional. The customer service I receive every visit leaves a positive and lasting impression. I always feel comfortable and at ease while I am there. Great staff!

I seem to live at this place! Whether it’s for an appointment with a doctor or for an aesthetic treatment, I am there frequently. I cannot say enough good things. Efficient, friendly, the best doctors, and a new aesthetic center with the latest in procedures and products to keep us looking almost as young as we feel. It’s always fun to see Emily and she knows just what to recommend.
