It can be quite alarming to discover a lump under your skin. It is always advisable to see a board certified dermatologist when you discover any types of skin changes. If your physician diagnoses your lump as a lipoma, there is typically nothing to fear. Lipomas can occur anywhere on the body and they are fairly common in middle adulthood.
- What a Lipoma Is
- Lipomas are simply growths of fatty tissues between the skin and underlying muscle. They often feel soft and “doughy” to the touch. Most lipomas are not tender or painful. In fact, you will likely be able to slightly move your lipoma under the skin without discomfort. Lipomas are slow growing, which means they don’t usually get noticed or cause concern until they reach a notable size. Most patients who want to have a lipoma removed do so due to cosmetic reasons or when the lipoma is pressing on a nerve or located in a uncomfortable area of the body.
- What a Lipoma is Not
- While lipomas are considered soft tissue tumors, they are typically not cancerous. Most lipomas are not indicative of any serious medical concern. It is still important that a qualified physician examine your skin lump to make an accurate diagnosis.
- Who Gets Lipomas
- The cause of lipomas are not known. However, physical trauma, certain genetic disorders and age tend to be risk factors. Most lipomas are found on those that are between the ages of 40 and 60.
