What Is Triggering Your Acne?

Acne can be one of the most frustrating and difficult skin conditions to control. Although it is usually associated with teenagers, adults can struggle with acne too.

There are four major factors that are responsible for causing acne: overactive oil glands, bacteria, inflammation and blockage of skin pores.

Discovering (and avoiding) what triggers your acne breakouts is a large part of managing this disruptive condition. The American Academy of Family Physicians notes these possible factors for triggering your acne breakout:

  • Using products with an oil base, such as cosmetics, hair products and suntan oil.
  • Being under emotional stress.
  • Undergoing changes in your hormones, particularly during menstruation.
  • Picking at or squeezing pimples on your skin.
  • Scrubbing your skin too vigorously.

It is also worth noting the common myths when it comes to acne. Despite what you have been told, greasy foods do not cause acne. In addition, dirty skin will not trigger your breakout. While it helps to gently remove excess oil and dead skin for a clearer complexion, the amount of dirt on your skin does not contribute to acne.
