Understanding Sensitive Skin: Winter Challenges and How to Soothe It

Mar 10, 2026 | Skin Care

When the temperature and humidity drop in winter, it’s time to save our skin!

The outermost layer of skin can become compromised during colder months. The stratum corneum, composed of skin cells, lipids, and oils, helps hold in moisture and deter skin irritants. Frosty temps and low humidity can do a negative number on this protective layer and keep it from doing its job.

How can we protect our skin from the threatening chill? The experts at Olansky Dermatology & Aesthetics are here to better explain the challenge and share winter skincare strategies to help provide dry skin relief and protect the skin.

Why is My Skin So Sensitive in the Winter?

Winter provides the perfect storm for sensitive skin issues. Cold air causes a drop in moisture and humidity, which can lead to moisture loss in the skin, known as transepidermal water loss (TEWL). This causes water to pass through layers of skin and evaporate on the skin’s surface, resulting in dry skin. Indoor, forced-air heating also pulls hydration from the skin. Dry skin symptoms can include itchy, rough, and white, flaky skin.

The dry, winter air is known to trigger or complicate existing cases of skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.

Best Winter Skincare for Sensitive Skin

According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD), it’s good to have skin care products to help your skin plow through winter obstacles. Choose a gentle, moisturizing facial cleanser that doesn’t contain alcohol. While the face is a key area, don’t forget about the rest of the body. A fragrance-free body cleanser with a creamy consistency can do the trick.

In addition to cleansers, moisturizers are essential. What’s the best moisturizer for winter? When it comes to a facial moisturizer, keep an eye out for creams, oils, or balms. They offer better hydration, protect the skin barrier, and prevent moisture loss. Check labels for hyaluronic acid and jojoba oil as they’re among the prime hydrating ingredients available. Body moisturizing calls for thicker formulas that bring more moisture. After bathing or showering, immediately moisturize your body while the skin is still damp, because the moisturizer traps the existing moisture in the skin.

While it may seem like overkill, it’s still important to use sunscreen in the winter for a variety of reasons. When it comes to combating dry skin, sunscreen serves as a protective barrier against cold air and wind, minimizing the loss of moisture from the skin.
