How Often Should You See a Dermatologist?

Clear skin can provide a confidence boost, but healthy skin can actually impact your overall physical health. Your skin is your body’s largest organ and its first line of defense against infection. Regular visits to your dermatologist (a doctor who specializes in hair, skin, and nails) will not only help keep this vital organ generally healthy, but also help prevent future skin complications or disease.

Why You Should Visit a Dermatologist

You may only think of visiting a dermatologist if you have a visible problem such as acne or a violent rash. But you can see a dermatologist for a multitude of other concerns, including:

  • A changing mole or birthmark
  • Hives or warts
  • Wound scars
  • Chronic conditions including eczema, rosacea, or psoriasis
  • Ingrown nails or nail fungus
  • Hair loss or thinning
  • Skin cancer screening

In general, it is recommended to visit your dermatologist at least once a year, as your skin can change a lot within 365 days, thanks to sunburns, rashes, scaliness, moles, and more. Your dermatologist can help track these changes over time, and also provide consistent advice on how to best treat each condition.

Dermatologists Prevent Skin Cancer

Approximately 9,500 people are diagnosed with skin cancer every day, making it the most prevalent cancer in the United States. Skin cancer should be diagnosed as early as possible for the best treatment, and annual screenings are one of the best methods for early detection.

During an annual screening, your dermatologist will examine your skin for any abnormalities that may be a symptom of skin cancer, including:

  • Changing or asymmetrical mole
  • Dome-shaped growth
  • A scaly patch of skin
  • A sore that does not heal, or heals and comes back.

How Dermatologists Help

If skin cancer is a concern, your dermatologist will take a small sample of your skin (biopsy), and test it for cancer cells. If cancer is discovered, there are a few options for treatment, including freezing the skin patch to remove the cancer cells, performing Mohs or another type of surgery, and in some cases consulting with your doctor regarding further cancer treatments.

But even if skin cancer is not a concern, your dermatologist can help you focus on the best methods to diminish any discomfort and maintain your skin’s health. After your annual examination and consultation, your dermatologist may recommend a variety of treatments based on your needs, including topical steroids or antihistamines for acne and rashes, or oral prescriptions to combat hair loss. Together you can also discuss treatments for other surface conditions, such as miraDry® for sweating, or aesthetic procedures that can enhance your skin’s appearance and reverse the signs of aging.

Even if all you want is some advice on how to cleanse and moisturize your skin properly — a consult with your dermatologist can help!

When are More Visits Required?

If you experience any symptoms you may suspect are skin cancer, schedule an appointment with your dermatologist even before you’re due. If you have a family history of skin cancer or a chronic condition that requires more regular monitoring, your dermatologist may also recommend consultations more than once a year. And of course if an unexpected condition arises, or a chronic condition worsens, you can also arrange a visit to provide immediate relief.
