Dr. Amaris Geisler Joins WSB Radio’s “The Weekly Check-Up” to Discuss Skin Health, Diversity, and Often-Overlooked Conditions

Dr. Amaris Geisler of Olansky Dermatology & Aesthetics recently appeared on WSB Radio’s “The Weekly Check-Up” with Dr. Bruce Feinberg, where she shared expert insight on skin health, with a focus on skin of color, pigment disorders, hair loss, and dermatologic conditions that are frequently overlooked or misunderstood. The episode aired on January 25 on 95.5 WSB, Atlanta’s News & Talk.

During the conversation, Dr. Geisler discussed her unique path into medicine and dermatology, which began in New York through a combined undergraduate and medical school program focused on serving underserved communities. That early training played a significant role in shaping her interest in health equity and dermatologic care for diverse patient populations. After completing medical school, Dr. Geisler pursued dermatology—one of the most competitive medical specialties—and later completed her dermatology residency at Emory University before settling in Georgia.

A key theme of the episode centered on how biologic differences in skin affect the way conditions present and are diagnosed. “Our biology is our biology,” Dr. Geisler explained, noting that while skin cancer and inflammatory skin conditions affect all skin tones, they can look very different depending on a patient’s pigmentation. She shared that melanoma in patients with darker skin is more likely to appear in less obvious areas, such as under the fingernails, toenails, or on the hands and feet—areas patients may not routinely check.

Dr. Geisler also discussed common concerns she sees daily in practice, including hair loss, pigment disorders, hidradenitis suppurativa, and keloid scarring. When it comes to hair loss, she emphasized that “hair loss is not a diagnosis—it’s a symptom,” underscoring the importance of proper evaluation to determine whether the condition is scarring or non-scarring and which treatments may be effective. In discussing pigment issues, she highlighted sun protection as essential and shared a practical tip for patients: tinted sunscreens containing iron oxide can help protect against visible light, which plays a major role in pigment development.

Another important part of the discussion focused on vulvar dermatology—an area Dr. Geisler described as significantly underserved. “The vulva is skin, just like the rest of the body,” she explained, noting that conditions such as eczema, infections, and even skin cancer can develop there. Because patients may feel embarrassed or hesitant to bring up symptoms, issues can go undiagnosed for years. Dr. Geisler encouraged patients not to ignore persistent itching, rashes, or growths, sharing that many of her patients experience relief after years of unanswered questions. “There is relief, and there is hope,” she said.

Dr. Geisler concluded the episode by sharing what drew her to Olansky Dermatology & Aesthetics and her commitment to individualized, evidence-based care. Now seeing patients at Olansky’s Buford location, she treats patients of all ages and provides comprehensive medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology services. “We really prioritize individual care of each patient,” she shared, emphasizing the practice’s collaborative approach and strong referral network.
