Is Your Skin Rash Contagious?

three generation family Comprehensive Skin Care for the Entire Family

Noticing a rash on your skin or your child’s skin can be unnerving, especially if you aren’t sure what it is. A top question when it comes to an undiagnosed skin rash is whether or not it is contagious. Here is a list of common contagious skin diseases that can affect both children and adults:

Poison Ivy Rash
One of the most popular contagious skin rashes is poison ivy, which is a reaction to the skin’s direct contact with the oil in a poison ivy, poison oak or poison sumac plant. If the plant’s oil remain on your clothes, skin, or fingernails, this itchy rash can spread to another person. Wash the affected areas with soap and water immediately.
Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) Infection
MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a bacteria that’s resistant to many antibiotics. A community associated MRSA infection (one that originates outside of a healthcare facility) usually develops as a painful boil on the skin. However, a fever, pus or drainage may also be present. Most MRSA infections can be treated with an antibiotic, but this skin infection can spread from skin-to-skin contact or through razors, washcloths, etc.
Scabies is a pimple-like rash that will eventually scab over. It can be extremely itchy and is caused by a mite that burrows into the skin to lay eggs. Scabies is especially contagious when the rash contains crusted scabs.
Molluscum Contagiosum (MC)
Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a viral skin infection, and one that is common in kids. It appears as small white or pink bumps that resemble warts. MC is more likely to develop in an environment that is hot and humid, and which puts gymnasts and swimmers at higher risk. MC is spread from contaminated water or even a shared towel.
Ringworm is not actually a worm. It is caused by a fungus, the same fungus that leads to athlete’s foot. Skin-to-skin contact, sharing hairbrushes, clothing or towels and walking around barefoot in a locker room are common ways that ringworm is spread. Ringworm appears as a circular rash with a red or pink border and pale center, which is how it got its name.
Impetigo is another contagious skin disease that affects children more than adults. It is marked by the presence of red sores around the mouth and nose. These sores can burst open and crust over. This is a highly contagious skin rash that may need antibiotic treatment.

Trying to determine whether your skin rash is contagious or not can be a difficult task to do on your own, especially if you are relying on Internet images to make your self-diagnosis. At Olansky Dermatology Associates, we recommend seeing one of our skin care experts for an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan. We can tell you if your rash is contagious right away, which can often prevent other family members or close friends from contracting the rash. We treat all types of skin conditions for children, teens and adults in our state-of-the-art dermatology practice in Atlanta. In the meantime, practicing good hygiene is the best way to avoid catching or spreading a contagious skin rash.

Mandy Ramer, NP-C was such a pleasure to meet with. She listened to all of my concerns and addressed each one with a plan that fit my needs. I am so glad I picked Olansky Dermatology. Absolutely thrilled with their service from appointment setting through check out.

The appointment process is quick easy and convenient online. Parking is easy enough. I got in basically right at my appointment time. I didn’t have to wait hardly at all. The doctors and nurses are nice, knowledgeable and helpful. The procedure I had was easy and I got out fast and was on my way.

This was probably the best experience I’ve ever had going to a dermatologist. Every interaction I had with the staff was pleasant and they were so helpful. I had accidentally cancelled my appointment and the girls at the front desk help me get in so I could be seen and someone could help me. Which I really appreciated, most places would have just turned me away. The doctor or pa I saw that day I can’t remember her name was lovely and took great care of me. I will be going to Olansky’s going forward. You will not be disappointed! The staff is excellent!

Dr. Bender honestly changed my life around. I had extremely bad hormonal and cystic acne, and have been told for years that there is nothing I can do but wash my face and etc.. Dr. Bender gave me hope that there is hope she helped get my confidence back and now I’m finally free. She cares about her patients and takes her time with you every visit. If you need help in anything derma-logical then you really need to go to her.

Olansky Dermatology is wonderful! Our whole family goes. My daughter has had terrible eczema through the years and both my kids had mollescum too. They always make things better and spend time explaining whats wrong and how to fix it.

I was actually running a bit late, but they were very friendly and knowledgeable about what was going on with my skin. And also very timely.I will definitely stick with them!

Very professional and pleasant staff. When I arrived at my appointment this afternoon I was informed that my doctor called out sick and they tried calling to let me know but I just recently changed my number so they were unable to reach me. The receptionist was so sweet and helpful. Instead of leaving and making a new appointment they fit me in without an issue and without any waiting.

Dr. Ilyas was highly recommended to me so I decided to change dermatologists. I am so glad as I am pleased with his expertise and his highly professional manner. I am also delighted with Emily Raville, Aesthetician. She does a wonderful job and I am recommending her to my friends as well. I am completely satisfied – can’t get any better than that!
