Reduce Your Risk For Psoriasis Flare-Ups

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition that can be quite uncomfortable and disruptive. Those that suffer from psoriasis experience patches of raised, red skin that are often topped with loose, silvery scales.Psoriasis flare-ups are perhaps the worst aspect of this condition, as the patches can become itchy, inflamed and even painful.  The good news is that there are treatment options available from your dermatologist that can minimize your psoriasis symptoms, such as topical steroid creams, systemic medication or even light therapy. However, there are also things you can at home to lessen your chances of a psoriasis flare-up.

Hydrate

Sometimes the simplest measures matter most. Make sure you keep your skin moisturized throughout the day (especially during cold weather or after a bath). This will help your skin heal. Choose a cream or ointment for the best moisture protection.

Relax

Studies have proven that stress is a major trigger for psoriasis symptoms. Find ways to lower your stress levels and relax if you want to reduce your likelihood of flare-ups. This may include yoga, adequate amounts of sleep, and a healthier diet.

Stay Soft

It is important that you avoid rough fabrics and harsh skin care products if you have psoriasis, as these can further irritate your skin and trigger worsening symptoms. Opt for a soft cotton wardrobe when possible and ask your dermatologist about which soaps, make-up and lotions are best. You’ll need to stay away from fragrances and alcohol-containing products for best results.

Don’t Scratch

It can be tempting to scratch your itchy, irritated patches during a flare-up. However, this will only damage your skin and cause more itching. Even tiny tears in your skin can invite germs and bacteria to penetrate, which could lead to an infection. To resist the urge to scratch, opt for rubbing moisturizer on the area instead.
