Chlorine and Your Skin

Pool days are upon us. Swimming is certainly a favorite summer activity for all ages. However, before you spend hours dipping your body in and out of the refreshing pool, you’ll want know the effects that chlorine can have on your skin.

Chlorine is added to swimming pools to kill harmful bacteria in the water. This disinfectant keeps us from getting sick from E. coli and other germs. However, chlorine strips away the natural oils of our skin as well. We need these oils to keep our skin protected. This is why you may find that you are especially itchy after a long swim – your skin is craving moisture! If you frequent large pools, such as those in your neighborhood or aquatic center, you are likely even more at risk, as the chlorine content is often much higher in public pools to counteract the additional germs. Keep in mind that chlorine affects your hair in the same way that it affects your skin.

Don’t worry; this news isn’t to spoil your summer fun. You can still enjoy the swimming pool, but you’ll need to take some extra precautions. As soon as you can, head for the showers after your swim. Use plenty of soap and water to rinse away the chlorine off of your skin. If you find that your skin is extra sensitive or you frequent high-chlorine pools, talk to your dermatologist. There are swim skin care products that neutralize chlorine, remove odors and add moisture back to the skin.

Whether you swim for sport or like to dip in to to cool off, getting in the pool doesn’t have to compromise your skin health. For more information on how you can keep your skin and hair healthy this summer, call Olansky Dermatology Associates in Atlanta.
