4 Habits That Can Make Your Skin Age Faster

There are some impressive treatments on the market to reverse the signs of facial aging, including plastic surgery, dermal fillers, chemical peels, facials and more. However, nothing is more powerful than slowing down the aging process naturally. There are certain lifestyle habits that can dramatically age your skin, causing wrinkles, fine lines, pigmentation and sagging skin. By eliminating the following, you can prolong or avoid the need for plastic surgery or rejuvenation therapies.

Not Wearing Sunscreen
Chronic exposure to UV radiation from the sun not only puts you at risk for skin cancer and causes pigmentation, it can also lead to damaged elastin. Elastin are fibers in your skin that help it retain its tightness and form. Therefore, those that avoid sunscreen on a daily basis may encounter sagging skin sooner than those who wear an SPF.
Smoking
Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor, which means that the blood that carries vital nutrients to the skin is constricted or reduced. Smoking cigarettes is known to cause wrinkly, yellowed and aged skin.
Sleeping in your Makeup
After a long day, it can be difficult to muster up the energy to wash your face. However, neglecting to wash your makeup off could cause premature facial aging and other complexion issues. When the pores get clogged, irritation and even infection can occur within the skin. This can cause acne breakouts or even redness around the eyes. Beyond not allowing your skin to “breathe” at night, you are also exposing your complexion to longer periods of free radicals, which can break down collagen!
Not Getting Enough Sleep
Your entire body needs sleep. Considering that your skin is the largest organ in your body, your skin requires an adequate amount of shuteye each night. During your sleep, your skin renews and repairs itself. Not getting enough sleep has been associated with more fine lines, increased pigmentation and less skin elasticity.

Is your lifestyle habits fostering a healthy and youthful complexion? At Olansky Dermatology Associates, we are fully equipped to offer patients non-surgical treatments to reduce or eliminate the signs of facial aging. However, we value the importance of helping patients slow down the aging process if possible. This often includes changing lifestyle habits, such as wearing daily sunscreen, quitting smoking and getting more sleep each night. What changes can you make to keep the wrinkles at bay?
